I’m Decided, It’s None of the Above
I was ready for what was billed to be the “Whewy in St. Lou-ee”. A no holds barred professional smack-down from the polished politician of the left upon the bubbly bimbo of the right.
The train wreck for Palin was inevitable. We’ve all seen her interview with Katie Couric by now, we felt embarrassed for the poor deer caught in the headlights state of being Palin seemed stuck in…
And we all helped to unfairly lower the bar for her big prime time debate against the seasoned Senator because we just felt so bad for the poor little girly.
Biden needed to be focused, on message and merciful in his thrashing. The standards and expectations were set. Palin just needed to remain standing at the final bell, and we were all pretty sure that would even be too much for her.
So why, oh why, did Joe refuse to get in the ring and mix it up?
For 2 days I’ve listened to blow-hards and pundits analyze the Veep debate and talk about how it was a virtual draw. That’s hogwash and bull pucky (to borrow from Palin’s vernacular)!
Not only was Palin still standing in the end, she won on points after Biden spent the whole fight running from her and mouthing off to McCain from the ropes. I’ve seen this same match before on hundreds of Vince McMahon’s WWE productions. And the result is always the same.
The sure winner going in pays little attention to his actual opponent, turns his back to shout off to another fighter who isn’t even in the ring and… WHAM! gets a chair across his back from behind by the outmatched opponent who should have been put down in record time.
I’m using a lot of wrestling references here and must admit I haven’t watched wrestling since I reached the age of reason (somewhere around 7), but I wanted to connect with and show good will towards any McCain-Palin supporters who might be reading this.
As I saw it there was no tie, Palin kicked Biden’s ass because Biden refused to fight.
I don’t mean by any measure that Biden should have attacked her personally, that would have been stupid. But how about attacking her policies and leadership as Mayor and Governor. She does have a record from this time, right?
And I’m willing to bet her record reflects her far-right, very Bush-like positions and style. What I’ve seen of it does. Are the Democrats running short on researchers now?
This was Biden’s one chance to pull the legs out from under the McCain-Palin ticket, not by attacking John McCain, let Obama fight his own battles–but by displaying to the American people just how wrong and ineffective the fairer half of that ticket would be for America based on her own political record. [NOTE: some may object to my use of "fairer" in that sentence, but with great contemplation I've realized that no accurate adjective would have been perceived any better. Could you imagine if I had used "lesser half of that ticket"?]
Obama and Biden have a real problem now because there won’t be another chance to make that case to the people without seeming like overly-aggressive men going after a poor little ol’ soccer Mom after-the-fact. Anything they do or say now will appear vengeful and of spite, not fair–no matter how true it may be.
Palin will spend the next few weeks before the election with minimal real exposure. She’ll speak to small and very select (hand picked) groups who are already inline with her mythologies and far away from the real national spotlights just to prevent Democrats from getting another chance to illustrate her short comings to rational voters.
This debate was the one opportunity for Democrats to make that argument (with care to not get personal) against Palin’s policies and record without being viewed as girl-bashing men, and they blew it.
I don’t know who came up with the strategy of ignoring Palin and debating McCain while he wasn’t there for Biden, but it may prove to be the biggest political blunder since Peggy Noonan penned the line, “Read my lips, no new taxes”.
