Historic Nomination Announced
Posted by Scott BannonWith 33 years of military service, Lt. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody has been nominated to receive a 4th star and serve as head of the Army’s supply arm pending Senate approval of the nomination.
This nomination seemingly shatters 2 glass ceilings. First, that combat operations are the true path to earning a 4th star since Dunwoody has not held a combat position (by law women are prevented from combat jobs), and second, the more obvious gender barrier as Dunwoody would become the first female to receive the elusive 4th star with the Senate’s approval.
Women currently make up about 14% of all enlistees in the U.S. Army according to Army spokeswoman, Lt. Col. Anne Edgecomb, and CNN reports that there are currently 57 active duty women serving with a rank of General or Admiral in the armed forces. The Army currently has 11 four-star Generals, so if approved Dunwoody will be joinging a very exclusive club, and doing so as the first woman to gain entrance.
